Where is Izmir located in Turkey?
Izmir sits on the Aegean coast of western Turkey, wrapped around a long, sheltered bay. It is the country's third-largest city after Istanbul and Ankara and one of its main ports. The ancient Greeks knew it as Smyrna, and the city still carries that history in its old bazaar, its Ottoman clock tower and the seafront promenade the locals call the Kordon.
For a patient travelling from Europe, the city is easy to reach and easy to move around in. Izmir is also the gateway to some of the finest surviving classical sites in the Mediterranean. Things to do in Izmir while you recover
Most of your stay is about rest, check-ups and short, gentle walks. Izmir makes that easy. The Kordon promenade in Alsancak is long and flat, with cafés and benches along the water, and is the kind of slow walk surgeons usually encourage once you are back on your feet. Konak Square with its clock tower and the old Kemeraltı bazaar are close by for an hour or two out of the hotel.
Day trips to Ephesus, Pergamon or Şirince mean a car journey of an hour or more each way, uneven ancient paving, steps and strong sun. Whether and when you can go depends on the treatment you had and on how you are healing, so ask your surgeon or dentist before you plan one. Many patients choose to see a site on the day before treatment, near the end of their stay once they have been cleared, or on a later visit.
If you are wearing a compression garment, have fresh scars or are taking pain relief, keep outings short, drink plenty of water, cover scars from the sun and keep your coordinator's number to hand. The coordinator can arrange a driver for a day trip once your surgeon is happy for you to go.
