Bergama, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014, has been continuously inhabited despite invasions and destructions throughout its history, thanks to its strategic location, and has never disappeared from the stage of history.
In the Bakırçay basin, where the ancient city of Pergamon was founded, settlement traces dating back to prehistoric times can be found. On the hill where Pergamon was established, the remains point to the 7th, 6th, and 5th centuries BC. The name “Pergamon” derives from “Perg” or “Berg,” meaning “fortress” or “stronghold.”
