What is Şirince known for?
Şirince sits on a green hillside among olive groves and orchards, a short drive up a winding road from Selçuk. Its whitewashed houses with wooden upper floors and tiled roofs date mostly from the 19th century, when the village had a Greek-speaking population; after the population exchange of the 1920s it was resettled and given its present name.
Today the village is known for its fruit wines, made from local apples, cherries, peaches and other fruit, and for olive oil, soaps and handmade goods sold along its lanes. The restored Church of St John the Baptist stands near the top of the village, and the square below is lined with cafés and small restaurants.
Visitors come for the atmosphere rather than for a single sight: a slow walk, a coffee or a meal on a terrace with a view over the valley.
Getting there
How to get to Şirince from Izmir
From central Izmir, Şirince is around an hour and a quarter by car: south to Selçuk, then about 8 km up into the hills. Minibuses also run between Selçuk and the village.
Because it is so close to Ephesus, many visitors see the ancient city in the morning and come up to Şirince for lunch. If you are recovering, you may prefer to visit Şirince on its own; your coordinator can arrange a driver once your surgeon is happy for you to go.

Visiting Şirince after surgery
The village lanes are steep and cobbled, so wear flat, firm shoes and take it slowly; you can see a good part of Şirince from the square and the cafés without climbing to the top.
